【How to Maintain Your Weight for 20 Years】Avoiding Food Noise

For about 20 years, my weight has remained virtually unchanged.

I've consistently maintained a height of 158cm(5.1feet) and a weight around 47kg (103lb).

Of course, I pay attention to my diet and exercise to keep my weight stable.

However, the most beneficial factor has been living without being affected by food noise.

What is Food Noise?

a picture of scale

Food noise refers to “a state where thoughts about food consume your mind to the point of mental exhaustion and disrupt daily life.”

This isn't a new concept or a medical diagnosis.

It describes a state where thoughts about food won't leave you and constantly swirl around in your head.

Food Noise: Something Oprah Winfrey Also Struggled With

I first encountered this term in an article about dieting by Oprah Winfrey, the immensely popular American talk show host.

Oprah said it like this:“Thin people don't think about food. They eat when they're hungry and stop when they're full.”

Finding the Right Distance from Food

I'll Introduce a mindset for eating and weight management free from the influence of food noise.

“Let's eat because it's X o'clock” versus “Let's eat because I'm hungry”

For years, I've made it a habit to eat only after feeling genuinely hungry. I don't snack.

And once I finish eating, I forget about food and return to my daily routine.

For me, eating is just one small part of my many interests.

Let's try not to worry about the number on the scale.

I don't even own a scale.I gauge weight changes not by numbers, but by how my naked body looks in the mirror.

When I tell friends, “If you want to lose weight, don't step on a scale,” they laugh it off, but I genuinely believe it's quite true.

My idea is that if you have something else to be passionate about – something that makes you forget about weight numbers – you'll naturally achieve an ideal eating pattern. It could be work or a hobby.

You find other pleasures as satisfying as eating.

Food occupies less space in your mind.

You naturally maintain a healthy weight.

Overeating isn't because you lack willpower.

Even someone like me suffered from stress-induced overeating during my student days.

I ate constantly, like breathing, and gained 10kg in just two months.

It was quite severe—I had absolutely no control over my eating.

The stress eventually eased naturally, but the fear of gaining weight still haunts me.

It's only natural for humans to be instinctively interested in food.

I don't think successful dieting is about having strong or weak willpower.
